Employer-sponsored dental benefits plans pay for nearly one-half of the cost of dental care services in the U.S. These conventional dental plans can be expensive, confusing and challenging to the patient-dentist relationship. Learn about Direct Reimbursement (DR) and why this dollar-based dental benefit best serves employers, employees and dentists.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do the following:

  1. Understand the key economic concepts behind health and dental economics.
  2. Understand the employer’s perspective on dental benefits.
  3. Discuss the differences between medicine and dentistry.
  4. Understand the function and rationale behind the dollar-based dental benefit, Direct Reimbursement.
  5. Understand the Six Measures of Dental Plan Performance.
  6. Know the response to contrary claims about Direct Reimbursement.

Abstract:
This course provides a foundation of dental care economics, an understanding of the two markets of dental care, and an introduction to Direct Reimbursement, the dental benefit plan that best serves these two markets. The course will provide a “just right” exposure to the employer’s view of dental benefits, the function of a dollar-based dental benefit and simple analysis of dental plan performance.
