Harold L. Kleinert, EdD.
Harold Kleinert is the Executive Director of the Human Development Institute at the University of Kentucky as well as Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling. He worked as a teacher of students with significant developmental disabilities for fifteen years, and has directed numerous national research and training projects in severe disabilities. Current research and training projects include the National Alternate Assessment Center, the Preservice Health Training Initiative, the Brighter Tomorrows Project, and the Hope for Tomorrow Project for families with adult children with developmental disabilities. From 2000-2001 he was the chair of the State Olmstead Planning Task Force; he was a member of the Kentucky Delegation to the Academy of the President’s Committee on Mental Retardation; and since 2000 he has been a member of the Kentucky Commission on Services and Supports for Persons with Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. His research interests include training medical, dental, and allied health professionals in providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities, alternate assessment and peer tutoring for students with significant cognitive disabilities, and physician training in providing accurate information to families upon the diagnosis of Down syndrome in their children.
Carla L. Sanders, MS, RN
Carla Sanders is the project coordinator for the Preservice Health Training Project at the Human Development Institute, University of Kentucky, where she completed a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling in 2005. Ms. Sanders began her career as a registered nurse in 1985, and currently continues her education as a graduate student in the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program at the University. Her clinical and personal experiences have given her valuable insight into the training needs of medical professionals working with patients having developmental disabilities. She has been an advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities since the diagnosis of her son with autism in 1994. Ms. Sanders received the 2005 NISH National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation and Design for her work to improve farm equipment accessibility for individuals with physical disability. Ms. Sander’s career plans include opening a multidisciplinary clinic specializing in autistic spectrum disorders.
John Mink, DMD
John Mink is Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Division Chief and Program Director of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Kentucky, College of Dentistry. He also functions as Consultant to the Kentucky Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs. Dr. Mink is former Chief of Dentistry at Kosair Children’s Hospital and James Witcomb Riley Children’s Hospital and is Board Certified in Pediatric Dentistry
David Nash, DMD, EdD.
David Nash is the William R. Willard Professor of Dental Education, and professor of pediatric dentistry in the College of Dentistry at the University of Kentucky. He holds joint appointments as professor of behavioral science in the College of Medicine, and professor of public health ethics in the College of Public Health. He both developed and teaches the College of Dentistry's three professional ethics courses. Dr. Nash also teaches both didactic and clinical pediatric dentistry. From 1987-1997, Nash was dean of the College of Dentistry at Kentucky. The author of numerous publications in the literature of dentistry, Nash’s primary writings are on dental education, published in the Journal of Dental Education. He has served as a visiting professor at over one-half of the nation's dental schools in the United States, and several institutions internationally. He has been acknowledged by his students with several outstanding teaching awards.
Jeff Johnson, DMD
Jeffrey T. Johnson, DMD, MPH. At the time of development of the Preservice Heatlh Training Project, Dr. Johnson was the Post Graduate Program Director for Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Kentucky and Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Health Science, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. His special areas of interest include health care access and culturally competent health care delivery modalities. Dr. Johnson is currently in private practice in Danville, KY.
Sara Boyd, B.S., M.A.
Sara Boyd is a research assistant for the Preservice Health Training Project at the Human Development Institute and a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Kentucky. She received her M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kentucky in 2006, and she received her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois in 2003. Her professional experience includes the provision of trainings in disability awareness for state employees and co-coordination of a multidisciplinary team working to address the problem of sexual assault and abuse of people with developmental disabilities in Kentucky. Her current research focuses on mental health of people with developmental and intellectual disability and the Five Factor Model of personality functioning. Sara was the recipient of the 2006 Anne Rudiger Award from the Association of University Centers on Disability.
Sandra Challman, M.S.L.S
From 1997 to the present, Sandra Challman has been a consultant and manager of Instructional Technology for the University of Kentucky (UK), College of Dentistry. Ms. Challman has previously held positions at the University of Kentucky Interdisciplinary Human Development Institute, the College of Medicine, and the College of Health Sciences. Her 25 years of experience at UK has resulted in expertise in the area of instructional design, curriculum and media development, information services, academic technologies and desktop computer training. Ms. Challman holds a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science, as well as a post-graduate certificate in Health Informatics from the University of Kentucky, School of Public Health.
