Dr. Maria Lopez Howell, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. She received her dental degree from the same University in 1983 and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program in 1995.
Dr. Howell is one of twelve national consumer advisors of the American Dental Association. She responds to both English and Spanish media regarding general issues in dentistry. Dr. Howell is the recipient of numerous honors. She was awarded a Presidential Citation Award from the President of the American Dental Association for her contributions to dentistry as a spokesperson. She was selected to the 1991 Who's Who Among Rising Young Americans, and was one of America's 2000 Notable Women in 1992. The San Antonio District Dental Society named Dr. Howell "The Young Dentist of the Year" for 1992-93. Dr. Howell was selected to participate in the 1992-93 Leadership San Antonio, a city-wide program that identifies potential community leaders. Dr. Howell and colleagues received the 1993 American Dental Association's Geriatric Dental Health Care Award. Dr. Howell was the Hispanic Dental Association's selection as Consultant to the American Dental Association's Task Force on Women and Minorities for 1992-93.
Dr. Howell maintains a private practice of General Dentistry in San Antonio. She holds membership in the American Dental Association, the American College of Dentists, the Hispanic Dental Association, and the International Association of Dental Research. She is active in organized dentistry at both the local and state levels. Dr. Howell is an elected member to the Executive Council of the Academy of Operative Dentistry.
