This course examines anterior maxillary alveolar ridge preservation techniques following removal of teeth with severe periodontal disease focusing on particulate synthetic osseous replacement grafts.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to do the following:

1. List the indications and advantages of using ridge preservation and augmentation procedures in the anterior maxilla.
2. Discuss some of the esthetic and speech considerations relative to fixed restorations in the anterior maxilla.
3. Describe the differences in the alveolar ridge after an augmentation procedure.
4. Compare the configuration of the alveolar ridge before and after a ridge preservation procedure.
5. Explain the differences between preservation and augmentation of the alveolar ridge.

A seven-year retrospective study is presented, reporting three cases in which particulate synthetic osseous replacement grafts were placed for ridge preservation and augmentation in the maxillary anterior region after extraction of periodontally hopeless teeth. The ability of an osseous replacement graft to prevent and correct the post-extraction atrophy of the alveolar ridge, as well as its esthetic implications in fixed prosthetics, is discussed.
